February 2010

We made it through January without a trip to the hospital...that is reason to celebrate over here! Joey basically
slept through January but we are seeing a small increase in his energy level and he has returned to school ... going three
days a week for a few hours each day. What a wonderful welcome he received on his first day back..."Welcome Back Joey"
banners and even some tears from the faculty...The Linda Nolen Learning Center truly is a wonderful school.
Speaking of schools, Gia will be transferring to Thompson High School on February 9. We will miss everyone at John
Carroll but we are looking forward to meeting new people at Thompson. The school is just minutes from the house so it
will be nice to have her so close to home. Gia is looking forward to being a part of their track team....at almost 5'10"
she's all legs.
It's that time of year again....Valentine King Joey may have to hand over his crown but with your help he can reign supreme
for one more year. My competitive nature really kicks in with these contests, in case you haven't noticed! ;-)
It's all for a wonderful cause and win or lose, all the children are the true winners as they will benefit from the wonderful
new equipment that can be purchased.

Our lives changed forever on the morning of October 29, 2009,
when Joey was rushed by ambulance from his school to Children's Hospital. Completely unresponsive with his O2 reaching
the lowest its ever been....39. Joey would spend seven weeks in the ICU/SCU slipping in and out of a coma. Joey
was intubated four times and four times our family told Joey "good-bye". By the grace of God Joey came home on December
17, the same night as the "2nd Annual Joey Paulin Christmas Benefit" hosted by Gia's dance teacher, Ms. Tiffany. To
everyone's surprise, Joey attended the benefit and was all smiles as he watched the girls dance on stage and had even bigger
smiles for two of his heroes from the Alabaster Fire Department who were also there that night. It seemed as if 'our
Joey' was back. Unfortunately, Joey went into severe respiratory distress on Christmas morning and spent five days in
the ICU...but our little fighter came home New Year's Eve and has been able to stay home since.

For those of you who have asked "How can I help?" First of all, we would appreciate
your prayers for Joey and our family. Please pray for Joey's healing and for God's wisdom for his doctors and specialists
so that we may one day have an answer. Secondly, a fund has been set up for Joey to help offset his ongoing & increasing
medical bills, medications and eqiupment needs.

I am fortunate enough to be involved with this wonderful organization.
In an effort to give our student athletes the most opportunity for success, a campaign to build a new sports stadium with
a synthetic turf playing surface and a new track has been started. Please click on the logo below to learn more about
the Alabaster Sports & Entertainment Foundation and how you can get involved. Thank you!

We are seeking corporate and local business participation along
with support from the community, parents and friends of the school. Your assistance with this project will benefit our children,
school and community for years to come. There is no better way to support children, students and community events than to
get involved with this effort. www.asef.biz

♥Joey Paulin
For Valentine King♥

The Linda Nolen Learning Center is holding their annual
Penny Drive to raise money for equipment purchases, transportation costs for field trips (such as aquatics and bowling) and
other special activities. After being away since October 29, 2009, Joey will returned to kindergarten on February 1,
2010. The two students (one male and one female) that bring in the most money will be crowned LNLC Valentine King & Queen.
Last year, Joey was crowned Valentine King bringing in
just over $1,100. With your help, my little guy can hold the crown for one more year! Your donation, in any amount, is very
much appreciated. All donations must be received by February 11, 2010. You can mail your check made out to THE
LINDA NOLEN LEARNING CENTER to Post Office Box 2571, Alabaster, AL 35007 or you can simply check on the "DONATE"
button below. Please put "VALENTINE KING" in the comment section if you donate online.
The Valentine's Day Dance and announcement
of the winners will be on February 12, 2010.

PLAYGROUND FRIENDS UPDATE!
www.playgroundfriends.com
In January 2009, I created "Playground Friends", a non-for-profit organization that was established to raise money to help build and maintain adaptive playgrounds
in Shelby County. I'm so excited to announce that we now have the
funds to break ground in Spring 2010 on our brand new adaptive playground!! My goal was $200,000 but to my shock and
surprise....$240,000 was raised! An article was in our local paper: http://www.alabasterreporter.com/news/2009/aug/27/lnlc-playground-reality/
